Our skin loses collagen as we age and are exposed to environmental stressors, causing wrinkles and other damage. Many of the resulting skin irregularities can be treated with a versatile treatment known as microneedling. Philadelphia’s Cross Medical Group offers this treatment for addressing acne scars, wrinkles, and more.

The FDA-cleared microneedling device revitalizes the skin by triggering natural healing processes to help you achieve a younger, more refreshed, and radiant appearance.

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is clinically proven to be a safe, effective technique for minimizing neck wrinkles and facial acne scars alike. The treatment takes advantage of your body’s wound-healing response by triggering the production of new collagen.

During a session, the skin is treated with small, sterilized needles that create hundreds to thousands of micro-punctures. These tiny injuries encourage the body to produce more collagen and elastin, which are the proteins skin needs to remain strong and smooth. The process also stimulates tissue remodeling without causing scar tissue to form.

No heat or chemicals are involved.

HOW DOES COLLAGEN INDUCTION WORK?

There are three components involved in the skin’s healing process: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. When microinjuries are created, this prompts the skin to create new tissue to repair the microscopic wounds. Specialized cells create collagen to close up the tiny channels created in the skin and a new network of blood vessels forms.

Once the new tissues have been built, the skin adopts a smoother, glowing, and youthful appearance. Skin imperfections look less prominent as a result.

It takes just a few, simple steps to complete the procedure. After your skin has been cleansed, a topical anesthetic can be applied to reduce discomfort as the device glides smoothly across your face.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is intended for men and women of all skin types. Patients who have active skin cancer, open wounds, sores, or irritation in the treatment area, allergies to stainless steel or anesthetics, a bleeding disorder, are pregnant or nursing, or are currently taking medications such as Accutane that contain isotretinoin should discuss other options with the team.

WHAT CAN MICRONEEDLING ADRESS?

In addition to general rejuvenation, microneedling has some specific benefits it can provide.

Scarring is one of the most common complications associated with acne. Microneedling encourages the production of collagen to improve a rough, uneven skin texture and reduce the scars that result from severe breakouts.

The neck is one of the first places to show signs of aging. In fact, this region may seem to age faster than the rest of your face. This is because the neck contains less collagen, fatty tissue, and oil glands. Aging, coupled with the repetitive motion of looking down at devices, can cause horizontal neck wrinkles to form. Microneedling treatments can minimize neck wrinkles and restore firmer skin.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT?

Microneedling is a simple procedure that is highly convenient and has little to no downtime. It’s normal for some redness and inflammation to develop, but these side effects should resolve on their own within the first three days. It will be safe for most patients to resume their normal activities within 24 hours.

Most patients will achieve optimal results with as little as three sessions spaced 30 days apart and will notice smoother, clearer skin within the first month. The appearance of your skin will continue to visibly improve for up to six months after your final treatment.

WHAT ARE SOME OTHER SKIN REJUVENATION ALTERNATIVES?

Cross Medical Group provides a full range of non-surgical skin resurfacing and rejuvenation options. Chemical peels involve the application of a specialized solution to slough away damaged outer layers of skin and kickstart skin cell turnover. Dermaplaning is another method of promoting skin cell renewal by mechanically exfoliating the skin. Laser skin resurfacing is also an effective way of boosting collagen production.
