BBL® HEROIC™ BASICS: HOW BROADBAND LIGHT® (BBL®) TECHNOLOGY WORKS
BBL®
BroadBand Light (BBL®) photorejuvenation treatments use multiple, strong wavelengths of light that are absorbed by pigmented lesions and visible vessels in the skin. This gentle, non-invasive technology, which was developed as a highly versatile and comprehensive light system, minimizes the appearance of skin conditions such as freckles, age spots, brown spots, broken capillaries, and melasma. BroadBand Light also stimulates the production of collagen. BBL® is effective for reducing a variety of skin concerns. The light gently heats the surface of the skin. This treatment brightens up the complexion and stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that provides structure and strength to the skin. BroadBand Light also promotes the body's self-healing ability to help regrow new, healthier skin.
BBL® HERO
BBL HERO® (High Energy Rapid Output) is the next generation BroadBand Light treatment after traditional BBL®. It improves the quality of the skin anywhere on the body by reducing pigment, redness, visible signs of aging, sun damage, and other concerns. While a typical BroadBand Light treatment is quite effective, BBL HERO® is an advancement on the technology that makes treatment sessions faster and more efficient with increased versatility. The flashes of light are more rapid, which results in a more powerful treatment that allows the aesthetician to target any area, including larger or multiple areas, without dramatically increasing the time of a session.
Despite the step up in intensity, patients can still expect comfort. The BBL HERO® device is specially designed to glide over the surface of the skin with the help of a friction-reducing gel, as opposed to being manually and repeatedly repositioned in overlapping sections. It also employs an enhanced cooling system. While temperatures in the targeted lesions are high enough to properly treat the pigmented cells, the surface temperature stays much cooler.
BBL HERO® is ideal for patients with light to medium skin tones, though it does also include a wavelength option for darker skin tones. It can treat almost any area on the body, but is typically used to target the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands.

RECOVERY FROM BBL®, BBL® HERO, AND BBL® HEROIC™
One of the major advantages of BBL® HEROic™ and the previous iterations of BBL® for photorejuvenation is that they won't get in the way of an active lifestyle and allow you to avoid side effects associated with taking medicines or using over-the-counter products.
Healing after any BroadBand Light modality is less involved than post-laser recovery. Patients may experience some burning, redness, and warmth that feels similar to a sunburn. Visible changes are usually seen within just a few days to weeks after your first BroadBand Light treatment and your skin will continue to evolve with each subsequent treatment.
There is virtually no downtime for traditional BBL® treatments. Patients can resume their normal activities after BBL HERO® and BBL® HEROic™ with no downtime. It's important to follow our post-treatment guidelines for BBL® HEROic™ and other BBL® options closely. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, and wear sunscreen daily.
HOW BBL® HEROIC™ COMPARES TO LASER SKIN RESURFACING
Both BBL® HEROic™ and laser skin resurfacing are energy-based treatments that improve a variety of skin conditions. Lasers skin resurfacing is a more intense treatment with a longer recovery, but it may provide more noticeable results in fewer treatments in comparison to BBL® HEROic™. Laser treatments involve single-wavelength and highly focused beams that narrowly target specific areas, while BBL® HEROic™ sends out more than one wavelength of pulsating light. As a result of this, BBL® HEROic™ can be used to treat a larger amount of skin in a shorter length of time compared to laser skin resurfacing.
