Ultherapy®

Tighten Lax Skin On The Face And Neck

Over time, the tight and firm skin of a person's youth will begin to loosen and sag on the face, neck, and upper chest. In addition to these contour changes, the quality of the skin itself will change, developing fine lines and wrinkles on the décolletage, as well as next to and under the eyes. With FDA-approved Ultherapy®, the Philadelphia and Villanova-based team of nurse clinicians at Cross Medical Group can use safe, time-tested, focused ultrasound energy to contract existing collagen and stimulate new collagen, which provides the skin's deep structural support layers.

What Is Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® is a treatment that helps to reverse signs of aging due to loss of collagen and elastin, two of the most important molecules in your skin. Collagen provides strength and structure. It's what gives the skin a tight, youthful appearance. Elastin provides elasticity, allowing the skin to stretch and return to its original position. When your skin begins to produce less collagen and elastin as you age, as well as when the molecules are damaged due to sun exposure or other causes, it becomes difficult for the skin to retain its shape. Wrinkles and sagging start to develop.

Ultherapy® basically creates a thermal reaction below the skin's surface, providing the ideal temperature to kickstart the skin's own natural process for collagen generation. Because Ultherapy® treatments are non-surgical and non-invasive, the surface of the skin remains untouched, while deeper tissues receive energy that propmts them to gradually tighten and firm up. In addition to triggering collagen production, the ultrasound energy from an Ultherapy® treatment also stimulates cells to produce new elastin, which further improves skin quality and tightness.

An Ultherapy® session takes 30 to 60 minutes, or longer if multiple layers or areas are being addressed. The appointment itself can take two to three hours depending on the intensity of the treatment and how many areas are being targeted.

No downtime is needed afterward. Patients are often able to leave the office and interact socially right away without any evidence of having had anything done. The face and neck gradually improve in appearance over three to six months. The smoother, tighter results tend to last two to three years. New sessions at that time can maintain the cosmetic improvements.

What Are The Benefits Of Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® is used to lift and tighten several areas on the face and body, including the brow line, chin, chest, and neck. The treatment is customizable and can be used to target specific areas that the patient believes need improvement. The results are not only long-lasting, but also look very natural and subtle.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Ultherapy®?

The best candidates for this low-risk, ultrasound-based skin-tightening treatment are in a good state of health and have mild to moderate signs of aging on the face. This includes sagging around the jawline and brow line, which do not require surgery for lifting or skin removal. Patients who are pregnant or have certain medical conditions may not be good candidates for Ultherapy®.

Other Options For Skin Tightening

Aside from Ultherapy®, there are numerous laser and light treatments, skin resurfacing, and radiofrequency treatments often used for tightening skin.

Laser skin resurfacing is a technique used to make lax skin firmer by introducing heat that causes the collagen in underlying layers to contract. It also stimulates collagen production. RF skin treatments work in a similar way to Ultherapy®, but utilize radiofrequency energy instead of ultrasound.

Patients interested in a longer-lasting, more dramatic improvement than can be achieved with Ultherapy® —such as those with more severe cases of sagging skin—can discuss a facelift with Dr. Kevin Cross.
