What Should You Expect After BroadBand Light (BBL®) Treatments?

“Laser Season” has finally arrived, bringing ideal conditions to get any type of light or laser treatment done. Since these treatments temporarily make your skin more susceptible to UV damage, they are frequently sought out during the cooler months when days are shorter and skin will be exposed to less sunlight. Energy-based cosmetic treatments are often the most effective types of procedures for correcting numerous issues that affect the tone, texture, and appearance of the skin. BroadBand Light (BBL®) at our Philadelphia-area practice is a light-based procedure used to undo visible signs of aging and skin damage by giving off energy that penetrates the skin and stimulates skin cell renewal, restoring brighter and younger-looking skin.

BBL® addresses everything from brown spots caused by sun damage, age spots, dilated blood vessels, and rosacea to body hair and acne. Since the treatment is gentle, most patients are able to return to their normal routines right after a session. It’s also safe to apply makeup and skin care products.

Although it is a non-invasive treatment and technically there is no downtime required after, it’s common to experience some mild side effects such as skin that looks and feels as if it is sunburned for several hours, post-procedure bruising, and sun sensitivity for several weeks. Sometimes swelling may occur, particularly around the eyes, for several days.

Our team has some recommendations to help you manage any adverse effects and prolong results after this procedure.

  • Be vigilant about sun protection. It’s best to avoid direct sunlight for at least two weeks after BBL®. We will apply sunscreen and moisturizer to soothe your skin as soon as you finish the procedure. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Blemishes on your skin such as sunspots will turn a darker color and flake off on their own, so avoid scrubbing or picking your skin.
  • Avoid using retinols or acids while your skin is healing.
