How Do You Choose the Best Post-Surgery Bra for Breast Augmentation?

There are many decisions to be made if you’re having breast augmentation surgery, such as what shape, size, and projection of implants you feel would be best for you. Additionally, knowing what you should do before the surgery to prepare and during recovery will also be critical. One question patients who are having breast augmentation should ask is, “What is the best type of bra for breast implants?” Our Philadelphia-area team at Cross Medical Group is happy to answer this and any other questions you have about the procedure.

In the meantime, see below for some basic tips to help you choose the best possible bra.

After you have breast augmentation surgery, getting a post-surgery bra that’s suitable for your unique needs will be important for your recovery. This will be more convenient, comfortable, and attractive compared to the bra you’re provided with right after breast augmentation, which was intended to help reduce swelling from the surgery. It’s always best to initially choose a bra that doesn’t have underwire during recovery, since wires may cut into the skin. Other important features patients should search for in the bra they choose are pockets, stretchy and soft fabrics, adjustable straps and closures, and longer lines that will feel less restrictive.

Patients often prefer to wear seamless sports bras. The bra that you choose should be supportive as implants eventually “drop” as they settle into their long-term place. Post-surgery bras will also support sutures and drains so that they can be easily attached if you have them. The most suitable type of bra for you will depend on what type of breast or chest surgery you have had.

Talk to Dr. Cross about how tight your bra should be, when the bra should be worn, and how long you should wear it after surgery. Since your scars will be tender while you’re recovering, it’s best to choose loose fitting, comfortable clothes, and they should be within easy reach.
