Will Your Eyes Look Larger After Eyelid Surgery?

Our eyes are often the first thing others notice about us. They’re important for drawing people in and communicating our emotions. As we age, however, changes to the skin and muscles around the eyes can cause drooping and make us look fatigued or older than we actually are. Since the skin is so thin around the eyes, it’s often the first area to show noticeable signs of aging. Many of us don’t like the changes we see, so we choose cosmetic surgery, such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), to address this cosmetic concern. But how exactly does blepharoplasty make you look different? Many Philadelphia-area patients want to know what to expect when they’re thinking about having eyelid surgery to correct sagging and puffiness around the eyes.

The shape and size of the eyes impacts the symmetry of the entire face. Bigger, clearer eyes are associated with beauty and are more noticeable than smaller, less-open ones. One of the reasons for this is that bigger eyes are linked to desirable personality traits like honesty, kindness, and warmth.

It’s important to remember that blepharoplasty can’t actually make your eyes bigger or alter their shape, but it can give them a more “open” look that creates the impression that they are larger. Although no cosmetic procedure will actually increase the height and width of your eyes, blepharoplasty will remove the excess skin from around the eyes. This can also improve your vision while providing a more “awake” appearance.

If you have always had “sleepy” eyes and want them to look bigger or have recently started to notice sagging skin around your eyes that makes them appear smaller, blepharoplasty can be an effective solution.

Patients who have one drooping lid, or lids that droop to different degrees, can also enjoy the results of blepharoplasty surgery. A more symmetrical face is typically more “inviting” for people who are used to seeing faces that have matching left and right sides.
