NON-SURGICAL DOUBLE CHIN REDUCTION IN THE PHILADELPHIA AREA

Kybella

Double chins are caused by a layer of excess fat that accumulates under the chin. This layer of unwanted fat is a common concern and can cause a great deal of frustration and distress. The problem is common for both men and women of all ages—even after weight loss. It can make them look older or heavier than they are, which can have a negative impact on self-esteem. Until recently, the only treatment for those looking to achieve a sharper and more chiseled chin was surgery with anesthesia or invasive neck liposuction. Kybella® at the Philadelphia area's Cross Medical Group is the first injectable substance that is FDA approved to address submental fat. It reduces a double chin using nothing but carefully placed injections made during a quick office appointment to achieve the correction.

WHAT CAUSES A DOUBLE CHIN?

The fat that makes up a double chin, also referred to as submental fat, is commonly associated with obesity, or at least being overweight. While weight gain from an excess of calories can cause a double chin, genetics, age, and other factors also play a role. Many people have a double chin despite being a healthy weight.

Also, although the fullness is often caused by an accumulation of large and stubborn fat cells, there are a variety of other possible causes for the look of a double chin, including skin laxity, poor posture, tense neck muscles, and even underlying health conditions.

The skin often becomes stretched over time due to age-related breakdown of collagen or exposure to ultraviolet radiation and other environmental destructors. If the bone structure of your jawline is underdeveloped or the chin area is recessed, these problems can also make a double chin look more pronounced. To determine whether Kybella® injections will be effective at reducing a particular patient's double chin, the team at Cross Medical Group first needs to identify what's causing the submental fullness.

Kybella® is intended for a double chin that is caused by excess fat. There are other solutions for patients whose fullness is due to skin laxity.

HOW DOES KYBELLA® WORK AS A FAT REDUCTION TREATMENT?

Kybella® is a safe and effective way to reduce chin fat and helps to improve the definition and contour of the jaw area. The active ingredient is a version of fat-dissolving deoxycholic acid, which is found naturally in the body. When injected, Kybella® breaks down the fat cells it encounters by disrupting the membranes that hold them together. The body then clears out the cells, leading to a gradual reduction in volume in the weeks after a Kybella® treatment.

WHAT IS THE KYBELLA® INJECTION PROCESS LIKE?

Before having Kybella®, patients will meet with their injector for an initial consultation. Kybella® treatments are performed at the Cross Medical Group offices in Philadelphia and Villanova by trained, experienced injectors who meet the highest standards for safety and ethics. They will discuss your medical history with you and talk about your goals to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for Kybella®.

During the session, a topical numbing agent is applied to the skin beforehand to improve patient comfort. The Kybella® is then injected into specific areas marked in advance below the chin.

Patients can return to normal activity right after their Kybella® injections are complete.

For the best results, patients typically need anywhere from two to four treatments, each four to six weeks apart. The procedure takes about 20 minutes per session. During the following weeks, the body progressively metabolizes the fat, and improvements will be seen.

Results from Kybella® are noticeable at four to six weeks and will last for years. Side effects such as discomfort, swelling, bruising, and numbness may occur, but these adverse effects are minimal and will begin to resolve within three to five days. The excess fat cells are gone for good, so the jawline area can no longer store as much fat as it did.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR BODY CONTOURING

It is important to remember that Kybella® can't tighten loose tissue. Since a double chin is often linked to sagging skin or underdeveloped bone structure, facial fillers are another alternative to consider for providing lift, support, and structure. Juvederm Voluma® XC is a hyaluronic acid filler used to contour the cheekbones, and it has the effect of adding definition to the jawline area.

Radiofrequency (RF) skin treatments promote collagen regeneration to add volume to and tighten loose skin on the lower jaw area. Ultrasound-based Ultherapy® treatments are another option for firming up tissues and skin around the neck and jaw areas.

Patients who want to reduce resistant pockets of fat on other areas of the body, such as the waist and abdomen, but who do not want surgery, can try laser-based SculpSure® treatments.
