Breast Surgery

Augmentation and Reduction for the Philadelphia Area

Breast surgery takes many forms at the Philadelphia area's Cross Plastic Surgery. Dr. Kevin Cross focuses on individualized procedures, since every patient has unique goals and a different starting point. For some, breast surgery may involve providing volume that they never had to create a better balance between their breasts and the rest of their body. For others, it may include adding volume that has been lost after a baby stopped nursing. Some patients have old implants that require exchange for newer, more appropriately sized and placed implants. Finally, many patients benefit from lifting and reduction to relieve the symptoms and burden of sagging and/or heavy and dense breasts

Breast Augmentation

Some people may think of breast augmentation as a breast surgery designed only to make smaller breasts larger, but the actual procedure is far more complex. Augmentation does not only impact the size of the breasts, but also their shape, projection, and symmetry, as well as their relationship to other body features and overall proportions. Standard augmentation surgery involves implants, while more recent techniques include fat grafting for more modest increases and natural-looking refinements. Post-childbirth augmentation addresses issues specific to mothers whose breasts have changed size due to pregnancy and nursing.

Breast Reduction

Overly large breasts can pull a woman down, both literally and figuratively. The weight of excessive breast tissue can cause discomfort and pain, posture problems, a poor fit when wearing outfits designed for women with more typical proportions, and even undue attention and embarrassment. Breast reduction removes tissue to create a smaller breast and relieve the tension. For this breast surgery, Dr. Cross creates support for the newly smaller breasts out of breast tissue itself—instead of skin that stretches over time. This allows his results to be more predictable, more powerful, and much more long lasting.

Mommy Makeover

Pregnancy hormones, the development of large milk ducts, and other baby-related changes can cause significant impacts on a woman's body—with some of the most noticeable alterations happening to the breasts. After a baby is born, some women's breasts shrink to smaller than they were before, while others stay overly large. Stretched-out skin may cause sagging. All of these problems can be addressed as part of a Mommy Makeover, which may also include body surgery procedures in addition to breast surgery to help a woman regain her pre-pregnancy proportions.

Gynecomastia Surgery

Not all breast surgery procedures are intended for women. A significant number of men develop the look of breasts at some point in life, and while the cosmetic problem frequently resolves on its own—as with hormone fluctuations during puberty—some men are stuck with contours that make them reluctant to take their shirts off in a variety of settings, from the pool to the bedroom. The problem is known as gynecomastia, and surgery to correct it can involve removing skin, fat, and breast tissue to shape a flatter, more masculine chest.

Breast Implant Removal

As much as we'd like them to remain forever, breast implants should not be considered "lifetime" devices. Leaks or other complications may occur, especially in older-generation implants, creating visible rippling or changes in breast shape. Some women may not like how their augmented breasts age, with larger implants pulling down increasingly inelastic skin to cause drooping. Other women may simply want breast surgery to get a different size or style as their tastes change—or could desire a return to a smaller-breasted look. No matter the reason, breast implant removal and revision can help.
